Monozygotic

Huh? What is that?

That means the girls are identical twins. For the past 14 months we have thought the girls were fraternal twins because our doctor tested the girls placentas when they were born and determined that they were fraternal. Apparently this test is not that accurate. If the egg splits within the first three days both twins will have their own placentas and sacks. We just assumed because the doctor said that they were fraternal they they were and we never thought much of it. Everybody we ran into always told us they had to be identical and we always would say otherwise. After hearing about several other people who got the same results from their doctors and had the DNA test confirm otherwise we decided to do the DNA test just to make sure. We got the kit, swabbed the inside of the mouths of both babies and sent off the "DNA" for testing. We got the results back today.

Here are the results from the letter.

"The twins are concordant for fifteen out of fifteen STR DNA markers. The twins are monozygotic (i.e. "identical twins") with a greater than 99% probability."

It's not like it really matters anyway. What are they going to do, give us a bigger tax break or something? It is nice though that we can finally say....

"Yes, they are identical".
